Whitehall: Hiram V. Griffin 89 of Whitehall, passed away on June 30, 2018 after a short illness at the Glens Falls Hospital surrounded by his loving family at his side.
He was born on April 17, 1929 in Whitehall the son of the late Hiram and Erma (Rich) Griffin.
Hiram was a long-time employee of the Delaware and Hudson Railroad and after many years worked his way up to Superintendent of operations.
He was a United States Army veteran of WW II and a life time member of the American Legion Post # 83 and the Elks Lodge # 1491 both of Whitehall.
His enjoyments included hunting, four- wheeling, making wishing wells and any projects that needed fixing. He was always there to help the family with taking care of the Grandchildren. Hiram was a kind, honest, hardworking, gentle soul who never complained and he also enjoyed going for long rides and playing kick ball even when he was confined to a wheelchair.
Besides his parents he is predeceased by his siblings Walter Griffin, Melvin Griffin, Leonard Griffin and his Sister Betty Griffin, his first wife Joyce, his grandsons Danon Whiting and his wife Mariah, Cole Rocque, and Christopher Wescott.
Hiram is survived by his children, Penny (Keith) Whiting, Suellen Griffin (Maureen), Betty (Bruce) Wescott, Regina Rocque and Joyce (Tobe) Corcoran and a sister Joyce (Paul) Brazier. His Grandchildren Laurel (Rick) Ferguson, Blaire Rocque, Brooke (Zachary) Rocque Tanner, Luke Wescott and Kendra Rocque. His great- grandchildren that he adored Zuri, Maddox, Jade, Behron, Gunner, Chloe and Aiden. He also has many nieces and nephews and his good friend Donny Herbst who always shared lunch and a laugh with him.
Family and Friends will be having visitation from 3:30 PM to 5: 00 PM at the Whitehall United Methodist Church on Saturday July 7, 2018 followed by a Memorial Service at 5:00 PM
Following the service, burial with full military honors will be conducted by the Whitehall American Legion post # 83 in the Greenmount Cemetery.
Following the burial there will be a Time for Fellowship and refreshments in the Whitehall United Methodist Church Hall.
The family wishes to express their deepest thanks and appreciation to the staff at Slate Valley Center in North Granville for their dedication, kindness and compassion for Hiram throughout the last couple of years and also the ICU staff at the Glens Falls Hospital
The Whitehall American Legion Post 83 will meet at 4:45PM to conduct a Legionnaires Service.
