Whitehall- Irena L. Austin, 91, passed away on October 31, 2018, at her home following a long Illness.
She was born in Whitehall on September 1, 1927, the daughter of the late Eli and Victoria (Besaw) Benway.
Irene was a communicant of the Our Lady of Hope Roman Catholic Church in Whitehall.
In her early years she worked at the Champlain Spinners silk mill. Upon her marriage to Charles F. Austin, she moved away with her husband as he began his military career. During that time she worked at a store in the Pentagon in Washington D.C., she also did some school teaching, but most of her life she was a homemaker and did enjoy quilting.
Beside her parents she was predeceased by her husband Charles Austin F. Austin Sr., her daughter Judy Scrime, her son John Austin, one brother Edward Benway, two sisters Gladys Ballard and Lorraine Hoyt.
Survivors include one son Charles F. Austin Jr and his wife Jessica, a sister Mildred Goff; Grandchildren Kenneth E. Austin, Charles F. Austin III, Ethan Allen Austin, Jacob Austin, Dion Kasper, Nathaniel Pauquette; one great-grandchild Austin Dion Kasper; several nieces and nephews.
Family and friends may call from 5-7PM on November 2, 2018 at the Jillson Funeral Home Inc., 46 Williams Street, Whitehall, NY.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00AM on Saturday November 3, 2018 at the Our Lady of Hope Roman Catholic Church in Whitehall, with the Reverend Rendell Torres, Pastor officiating. Interment will follow the Mass in the Our Lady of Angels cemetery in Whitehall.
The family has suggested that memorial contributions be made to the Our Lady of Hope Church.
