Aunt Lou was one of the kindest, thoughtful, and most generous people I know. Also she had a quiet quick sense of humor. You will be missed. Now the Carpenter girls can get together again.

This passing has struck us with thudding hearts and, in Russ's instance, wrenched memory from his introduction to public school where both Lillian (then-Newell) Hall and Luella Rathbun were among his three earliest, earnest, and loving teachers. We enjoyed and profited by our relationship with Lu through the intervening years after our marriage. She is among many teachers, neighbors, and acquaintances who showed the way to an ethical life and offered friendship in all circumstances. Lu blessed us and we will keep memory of her alive.
