Doris L. (Johnson) Austin

Whitehall, NY - Doris L. Austin, 94 passed away Thursday evening, January 12, 2017, at the Orchard Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

She was born on March 15, 1922, in Ticonderoga, NY, the daughter of the late Lawrence and Addie (Wheeler) Johnson.  She graduated from Ticonderoga High School in 1941, and was a telephone operator in Rochester and Ticonderoga, NY.

Doris married Hanford Austin on October 23, 1943, and they celebrated 68 years together. She enjoyed the country life and working with her family on their dairy farm on Granville Road.

She enjoyed large family gatherings, especially when there was music and dancing. She loved nature, animals, and the outdoors. Doris was extremely spiritual and was a devoted member of the Whitehall United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school for many years. She devoted her life to caring for loved ones.

 Doris will be dearly missed by her four sons; Kenneth and wife Karen of Whitehall, NY, Jerry and wife Gail of West Pawlet, VT, Stanley and wife Lee Mc Clure of Kingsbury, NY, Lawrence of Rutland, VT; a daughter, Lois Austin and husband John Sienkiewicz of Pittsford, VT; Seven treasured grandchildren, Marcy, Molly, Kyle, Thomas, Laura, Erin and Alex; and nine precious great grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, Hanford, son Donald, and grandson, Clayton.

Doris’s family is grateful for all the love and support she was given over the past five years by all of her Orchard Nursing and Rehabilitation Center family, and by her roommate Gerry Moore.

Family and friends will gather for a celebration of life for both Doris and Hanford Austin, on Monday, January 16, beginning with an 11am calling hour, with a memorial service beginning at 12pm, at the Whitehall United Methodist Church.  A reception will be held in the church hall immediately following.

Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made, to Whitehall United Methodist Church, 56 Greenmount Cemetery Lane, Whitehall, NY 12887.
