Hudson Falls: Retired First Sergeant, Frederick L. Foster, 71, of John Street, passed away at his home on December 24, 2015 following a long illness.
Born in Rutland, Vermont on February 5, 1944, he was the son of the late Frederick L. Sr. and Dorothy Huntington Foster.
Fred enlisted in the U. S. Army in 1962 and retired in 1984 including serving six years of active duty in the Vietnam War as a Green Beret, He was a member of the Special Forces and received nine Purple Hearts and six Bronze Stars.
He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 83 of Whitehall and also a member of the V. F. W. in Queensbury.
He enjoyed collecting coins and also any eagle memorabilia. He was an active member in the Boy Scouts and was a Boy Scout leader.
Fred was the proprietor of the Foster’s Family Cafe in Hudson Falls which he established in order to serve all veterans.
Besides his parents, he is predeceased by one brother, Francis “Zek” Foster and his uncle, Pat Huntington who he was very close to and several aunts and uncles.
Survivors include his wife, Catherine Hammond Foster, of Hudson Falls, his six children, Frederick Foster, III, Christopher Thor Foster, Adam Foster, Joanna Foster, Anthony Hammond, Thomas Curl and four grandsons; six sisters, Ann Nichols and her husband, Kent, Gail Dickinson, Karen Simpson and her husband, Larry, Barbara Schrammel and her husband Lottsey, Terry Anagnos and her husband, James, Kathy Dougherty and her husband, Shawn, Vicky Stevens and one brother, Robert Stevens and several nieces and nephews.
Family and friends may call at the Jillson Funeral Home, Inc., 46 Williams Street, Whitehall, New York on Wednesday, December 30, 2015 from 5 PM to 8PM. The American Legion, Post No. 83 will conduct a Legionnaire Service at 7:30 PM.
Interment, with full military honors, will be in the spring in Huletts Landing.
In memory of Fred, Cathy and Anthony put a free Christmas dinner on for all veterans.
