Whitehall – Grace Anna Barton Cuomo, ninety-one, passed away on December 4th, 2016, surrounded by her loving family. Born to parents James Barton and Anna Gordon on February 19th, 1925, Grace was a lifelong resident of Whitehall. On February 10th, 1946, she married the love of her life, Thomas Cuomo, after only a two-week courtship. They were happily married for seventy-one years. Together they founded Champlain Beef Company and built it to be the well-established family business it is today.
Grace traveled the world with her daughter and friends during her lifetime, bringing back countless tales of adventures from riding camels in Egypt, parasailing in Hawaii, and discovering family roots in Italy. She spent her winters in Boyton Beach, Florida, with family and friends to enjoy warm weather and escape the northeast winters. Grace also created a home away from home in Huletts Landing on Lake George, where she and Tom built a house in 1976. Grace enjoyed her summers there admiring the lake and watching her grandchildren pass summer vacations.
As a community minded person, Grace was involved in many local organizations. She was an active parishioner in her church, Our Lady of Hope. She and her husband Tom assisted in the financial success of the Skene Manor, where she enjoyed volunteering in their gift shop and decorating numerous trees for their Christmas celebrations. Grace was a member of Whitehall’s “Chapeau Rouge” Red Hats Society and enjoyed many of their luncheons. She was a member of Whitehall Hospital Guild for over 25 years, and lifelong member of the Fawns, the Elks Women’s Auxiliary.
Grace was known for her beautiful singing voice. She sang at many weddings, talent shows, and church services. Her favorite songs to perform were “Ave Maria” and, at Christmas, “O Holy Night.”
Grace, an amazing wife, mother, grandmother, and person, was the glue that held our family together. She will be missed dearly and forever be in our hearts.
Grace is survived by her husband, Thomas Cuomo, her daughter Marcia Cuomo Grady (John), sons Barton Cuomo (Jeannie), Jeff Cuomo (Pam), her grandchildren Jason Grady (Christine), Josh Cuomo (Heather), Grace Cuomo Durfee (Seth), Shannon Mowatt (Jared), Heather Cuomo-Wescott (Scott), Megan Cuomo, Shelby Cuomo. She is also survived by her nine great-grandchildren, Olivia and Ava Ruby, Quinn and Wyatt Durfee, Aiden, Thea, Lark Mowatt, Riley Cuomo and Alexander Grady.
The family would like to thank Grace’s caregivers Faye Jones and Kristi Jones, whom Grace loved dearly. Pallbearers are Jason Grady, Josh Cuomo, Scott Wescott, Seth Durfee, Jared Mowatt, and Marvin Frasier.
