Maureen Griffiths, of Rutland, Vermont, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, on August 5, 2025, at the age of 82. She was born in Rutland on January 22, 1943, the daughter of Francis and Naomi Brown McGinnis Derby, and remained a lifelong resident of the community she loved.
Maureen was a devoted mother to five children: Debra Griffin (Walter), Kathleen Anderson (Eric), Jeanne Ferguson (Paul), Joey Arquette (Kitty), and Judy Henry (Eric). She took great pride in her family and found deep joy in the lives and accomplishments of her children.
She was a cherished grandmother to Christopher Scott (Lauren), Sarah Fitzpatrick (David), Seth Scott, Katelyn Scott, Ashley Beatty (Jim), Niki Garrido (Alex), Jessica Anderson (Brock), Danielle Pennine (Sam), Justin Baldwin (Brigitte), PJ Ferguson (Lauren), Sheri Gordon( Leon), Paul Henry( Amanda), Jennifer Wade(Brock) and Joseph Arquette. Her legacy continues through her 26 great‑grandchildren and 4 great‑great‑grandchildren, each of whom brought her tremendous joy and pride.
She is survived by her loving sister, Carol McGinnis, and several nieces and nephews, along with many extended family members and dear friends.
Maureen was predeceased by her father Francis McGinnis, mother Naomi Brown Derby, and stepfather Lloyd (“Red”) Derby; her sister Jeannie McGinnis; and her brothers Jack, Richard, Robert, Francis, Ronald, and Arthur McGinnis. She was also predeceased by her granddaughter Shane Fuller and great‑grandson Grant Scott.
A woman of quiet strength and deep determination, Maureen was incredibly proud of her 38 years of sobriety. Her commitment to recovery was an inspiration to many, and she offered encouragement and compassion to others walking the same path.
A graveside service will be held on September 7, 2025 at 1PM, at Cedar Grove Cemetery in Fair Haven, Vermont.
She will be remembered for her resilience, warmth, and unwavering love for her family. Her presence will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew her.
