Myrtle Velma (Herron) Tellier

July 28, 1922 ~ March 19, 2017 (age 94) 94 Years Old


Whitehall-Myrtle Velma (Herron) Tellier, formerly of County Route 12 in Whitehall, and more recently a resident of The Orchard Nursing & Rehabilitation Centre in Granville, passed away on Sunday, March 19, 2017, at the Orchard following a short illness.

Velma, as she was known to her friends, was born on July 28, 1922, to George Adelbert and Lillian (Collins) Herron in Whitehall, New York.  Due to an early childhood illness, Mrs. Tellier became deaf and mute for the remainder of her life.

She was a graduate of the Northern School for the Deaf in Malone, New York, where she met Frederick Gerard Tellier, her future husband.  They were marred at the Notre Dame Des Victories (now Our Lady of Hope) Roman Catholic Church in Whitehall on October 12, 1974.  They shared 35 happy years together until his passing in 2009.  Both Mr. & Mrs. Tellier were extremely gifted people in the realm of arts & crafts and they were known throughout the area for the wonderful handicrafts that they made and sold at the local flea market for many years.  Velma was accomplished with equipment ranging from knitting needles to a table saw and everything in between including her pots & pans in the kitchen where she was a phenomenal cook.  She was a communicant of Our Lady of Hope Roman Catholic Church.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Tellier was predeceased by her two sisters: Georgianna “Chick” (Herron) Costantino and Janice (Herron) Rich and her niece Donna (Costantino) Ramey as well as her nephew Anthony Costantino.

She is survived by her nephew Del Costantino of Granville and his children Deana & Del Costantino of Glens Falls, her late nephew Anthony’s daughter Cassandra Costantino, as well as her cousin Marie Gandron of Whitehall and her sisters-in-law Gladys Tellier Bombard of Keeseville, New York, and Joan Tellier Rock of Port Kent, New York.

Never letting her handicap (which she never saw as a handicap) slow her down, Mrs. Tellier did home permanents before her marriage and also, being a fine seamstress, worked at The Kay McDowell Coat Factory and the Troy Shirt Factory, both in Whitehall.

Following her marriage, Velma and her husband moved to Southington, Connecticut, where they resided until Mr. Tellier’s retirement from the Pratt & Whitney Aircraft Company, at which time they moved back to Whitehall where they took up residence until Mrs. Tellier entered The Orchard.

Calling hours will be held on Wednesday March 22, 2017 from 6 pm – 8 pm at the Jillson Funeral Home Inc., 46 William Street, Whitehall, New York.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted on Friday, March 24, 2017 at 1:00 pm at Our Lady of Hope Roman Catholic Church, Skene Street, Whitehall, NY with the Reverend Rendell Torres, Pastor officiating.  Interment will take place at the Greenmount Cemetery, Whitehall, NY in the spring.

Contributions in Mrs. Tellier’s memory may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
