Nancy Bascue Obituary

Whitehall – Nancy J. Bascue passed onto her eternal rest at her home on Wednesday October 4, 2023.  She was born on February 1, 1924 in La Junta Colorado. She was the daughter of Consuelo (Gonzales) Sayas and Sirilo Sayas from Lagos DeMoreno, Mexico.

Nancy was a 1942 graduate of Lincoln High School in Milwaukee Wisconsin.  In 1944 she enlisted in the US Navy WAVES (Woman accepted for Volunteer Emergency Services) which was created during WWII to free up male personnel for sea duty.  Upon completion of a basic training, she was stationed at the Naval Air Station in Jacksonville, Florida as a telegrapher, typing in coded messages for the government.  It was there that she met and married cadet Naval Pilot Charles A. Bascue in 1945.  After the war they moved back to Charles’s hometown of Whitehall, NY where they raised five children.

Nancy was a talented seamstress spending several years working at the Whitehall Coat Factory and the Troy Shirt Factory in Glens Falls before ending her employment working at General Electric in Fort Edward where she retired in 1985.

Nancy was a communicant of Our Lady of Hope (formally Our Lady of Angles) Church in Whitehall.

Until recent years she was an active member of American Legion Post 83 in Whitehall where she served as Past Commander.

Nancy’s passion in life, aside from her family of which she was extremely proud, was to collect news clippings and pictures of the numerous accomplishments of her children and grandchildren.  She also spent much time knitting, crocheting, sewing and watching old movies.

She is survived by three of her children; Charles A. Bascue Jr., (Martha), Nancy Shannon Huntington (Jim), and Valarie Lisa DeLuca (Mark), daughter-in-law Sharon Bascue, grandchildren; Lauren Steves (Chris), Whitney Burger (Matt), Charlie Bascue (Laura), Scott Bascue, Christopher Bascue (Brenda), Kate Wiskowski (John), Jeffrey Bascue (Tammi), Denyelle Bascue, Brianne Steinke(Mark), Ken Curry, Jamie Huntington (Sherry), Brooke Smith (Chris), Rachel Waters (Matt), Rebecca Nelson (Chris) and Keirsten Marsisco (Joseph), 37 great grandchildren, 4 great-great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Nancy is also survived by siblings Lupe Donovan of Saulkville, Wisconsin, Barbara Sayas and Valentine Sayas of Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Joseph Sayas of Richspring, SC.

In addition to her husband of 54 years, she is pre-deceased by sons Jeffrey and Keith Bascue, granddaughter Britan Bardol and siblings Raymond and Juaquin Sayas, Nita Garcia, Francesca Poulin, Anita Sayas and Juanita Gonzales.
