Whitehall:  Richard S. Currier, 82, of Fourth Avenue, passed away on Saturday, March 12, 2016 at the Glens Falls Hospital with his loving family by his side.

Born on August 25, 1933 in Whitehall, he was the son of the late Richard and Margaret (Luce) Currier.

Richard served in the U. S. Air Force during the Korean War and was a strong advocate for veterans.  He could often be seen cleaning headstones of veterans in nearby cemeteries and also led a petition to have Audie Murphy, America’s most decorated veteran, be place on a stamp.  On May 3, 2000, the U. S. Postal Service issued a stamp commemorating Audie’s service. He spent many hours acquiring signatures and corresponding with Murphy’s sister, Nadine, in Texas.  Richard was given a plaque from the local Postmaster, Robert Kimmerly, for his persistent efforts.

He retired from International Paper Company in Ticonderoga after 33 years of employment.

Richard and his wife, Virginia, enjoyed visiting local nursing home residences in their retirement.  He also enjoyed spending time with his family and sitting around visiting with friends.

He was a communicant of Our Lady of Hope Roman Catholic Church in Whitehall

and was a member of the American Legion Post No. 83 of Whitehall.

Besides his parents, he is predeceased by his son, Mark Currier; one brother, Francis Currier and one sister, Anita Tanner.

Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Virginia Belden Currier of Whitehall; sons, Clint Currier of Moreau and John Currier of Cortland; step-sons, Rick Therrien of Hudson Falls and Mark Therrien of Rutland; 9 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren, cousins, nieces and nephews.
