Robert William Ames, Sr. peacefully passed at his home in Dunedin, Saturday, Jan. 23, 2016. Bob's acceptance of his leukemia diagnosis and his spirited battle of the past 21/2 years have been a source of inspiration to his family, friends, doctors and Hospice caretakers.

The middle son of James Ames, Sr. and Helen Munger Ames, Bob was born March 28, 1931 in Whitehall, NY. His education began in the one room Elbow School and culminated with his graduation from Whitehall High School in 1948. Throughout high school he was an outstanding southpaw pitcher. After a stint with the Red Sox Farm, he returned to Whitehall and married his high school sweetheart, Marion Mahar on April 29, 1951 – a decision he never regretted!

Bob enjoyed a 42 year career as a railroader. He served as a Union Representative and was respected by both Labor and Management. He was an active member of Whitehall K of C Council 276 and bowled on several local leagues.

For over 20 years Bob was a devoted and loyal volunteer at Mease Dunedin Hospital. Only because of his diagnosis, did he reluctantly give up this "job" he loved. Bob was also an active member of his Heather Lakes community. He enjoyed Bingo duties and played pool and shuffleboard. He willingly offered a helping hand to his neighbors and friends. He developed many lasting friendships at both the Hospital and Heather Lakes.

Bob was predeceased by his parents, older brother, Carroll, and his wife, Florence; his younger brother, James, Jr.; three beloved nephews, John Ames, William Blanchard, Jr. and Alan Trevellyan, Jr.

In addition to Marion, his devoted wife of 64 years, he is survived by daughter, Shelley Mulholland (late John); and son, Robert, Jr. (Rosie); four adored grandchildren, Janis Stipins III (Shaniqua), Robert Ames Stipins (their father, Janis, Jr), Robert Ames III (Scarlet) and Josephine Helen Ames (their mother, Lisa). His great-grandson, Julius John Stipins, was a source of special joy. Also survived by many beloved cousins, in-laws, nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be held on Thursday, July 21 from 4-7 PM at Jillson Funeral Home, 46 William St., Whitehall, NY

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on July 22 at 11:00 am at Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church, Skene St., Whitehall with Reverend Rendell Torres officiating.  Interment will follow in the Our Lady of Angels cemetery.

The family looks forward to greeting friends and family at a light luncheon which will be served in the Church Hall following the interment. All are welcome to share memories of Bob.
