Ross Mason Obituary

Whitehall-It is with sorrow we announce the passing of Ross A. Mason on May 2, 2025 in Whitehall, NY.

Known as "Mase" to his closest friends, Ross was born on October 27, 1962. An outdoorsman at heart, he found joy in snowmobiling and riding three- and four-wheelers throughout his life alongside his closest friends. He was an avid ice fisher, a passion instilled in him by his father, who was among the best.

Ross was a strong patriot who carried a deep respect for his country. After graduating from Whitehall High School in 1980, he enlisted in the United States Air Force and was stationed at Grand Forks Air Force Base, ND. As a Missile Maintainer, he played a vital role in ensuring the reliability of America’s nuclear deterrent during the Cold War by servicing Minuteman III Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles (ICBMs). Later, upon relocation to Dover AFB, DE, he transitioned into Aircraft Maintenance, working on the C-5 Galaxy mobility aircraft.

Following the birth of his first son in 1986, Ross returned to upstate New York where he joined the109th Airlift Wing of the New York Air National Guard, the only unit in the world equipped to fly ski-equipped LC-130 aircraft to polar regions. His service took him to Greenland and Antarctica on multiple occasion…and everywhere in-between he often claimed. Beyond his military service, Ross also dedicated 27 years to working as a New York State Corrections Officer.

Ross took great pride in his Australian heritage, a legacy rooted in his parents' love story. He maintained close connections with his Australian family throughout his life, cherishing them deeply.

A friend to many, Ross was defined by his generosity - offering whatever he could, whenever he could, simply because it was in his nature. A man of quiet compassion, he carried his love for others in his own way. His presence shaped the lives of those around him, and his legacy remains in the lessons learned, the moments shared, and the love that was always in his heart. His memory will forever live on by those who knew and loved him.

Ross was predeceased by his parents, Floyd & Elaine; his beloved wife, Patty, who stood by him through life’s joys and challenges; and his dear brother, William (Bill).

He is survived by his loving sister, Margaret (David), whose unwavering support was a constant throughout his life; his cherished children, Zachary (Lyka), Jedd (Joelle), and Paige (James); and his caring stepchildren, Jerrick (Kim) and Allison (Nathaniel). His legacy continues through his grandchildren, Ethan, Jack, Sydney, Declan, and several step-grandchildren.
