Whitehall: William J. “Moose” McLaughlin, Sr. 90, of First Avenue, passed away on Friday, September 9, 2016 at the Glens Falls Hospital after a long illness.

He was born August 15, 1926 in Whitehall, the son of the late William McLaughlin and Josephine (Lemley) McLaughlin Marr and his step-father Francis “Pop” Marr.

William and his brother, Edward, enlisted in the United States Navy at the same time and served in World War II.

He worked several years on the D & H Railroad and retired at the age of 61.  He also worked at Chaffee Lumber Company and MacLeod’s Lumber Company helping Mac sharpen blades.

William enjoyed fishing and deer hunting and brought home his trophy deer in 1947 on Thanksgiving Day and that was the day his sister, Fran, was born.

In the 1960’s he drove stock cars at the Fair Haven dirt track.  He enjoyed taking rides to South Bay, riding around town and sitting in the CVS parking lot watching traffic. He was a thoughtful man and would help anyone that needed a ride. 

He was a member of the American Legion Post #83 of Whitehall and the Fish and Game Club.

He loved going to the rifle range to site his guns every year and shoot at deer targets.

William married Audrey W. Davis on April 5, 1952. They were married for 56 years and she passed away in 2008.

He is predeceased by his brother Edward “Squeaky” McLaughlin and a grandson, Clayton “Buck” Austin.

He is survived by a daughter, Rosemary Austin and his son, William J. McLaughlin, Jr. both of Whitehall; two sisters, Catherine McLaughlin and Fran Doty both of Whitehall; his brother, Leslie “Bomber” Marr of Whitehall; a sister-in-law, Shirley Nutting of Wallingford, VT; his grandson, Thomas Austin and his wife, April of Greenville, SC and their children, Levi Clayton and Claire Elise; several nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews.

Family and friends may call at Jillson Funeral Home, Inc., 46 Williams Street, Whitehall on Tuesday, September 13, 2016 from  5 PM to 7 PM.  The American Legion Post #83 will conduct a Legionnaire Service at 6:45 PM.

The funeral service will be conducted on Wednesday, September 14, 2016 at a time and place to be announced.

Family has suggested that memorial contributions in Williams’s name made to the Whitehall United Methodist Church, 56 Greenmount Cemetery Lane, Whitehall, NY 12887.
